How to use the percent change calculator

  1. Enter the from-value (starting value) and the to-value (ending value).
  2. The calculator automatically shows whether it's an increase or decrease, and how many percent the change corresponds to.

How percent change is calculated

Percent change = ((To − From) ÷ From) × 100

If a number goes from 800 to 1000, the change is (1000 − 800) ÷ 800 × 100 = 25% — an increase of 25%. If the number gets smaller instead, the answer is negative, meaning a decrease.

It's easy to confuse percent change with a percentage-point change, but they don't mean the same thing. If an interest rate goes from 4% to 5%, that's a change of 1 percentage point — but measured as percent change it's an increase of 25% (because 1 ÷ 4 × 100 = 25). Percentage points show the raw difference between two percentage shares, while percent change shows how large the relative change is.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between percentage points and percent?

Percentage points are the raw difference between two percentage shares (e.g. from 4% to 5% is 1 percentage point), while percent change shows how large the relative change is compared to the starting value (1 ÷ 4 × 100 = 25% increase).

Why does the answer become negative on a decrease?

When the to-value is lower than the from-value, the difference (to − from) becomes negative. That gives a negative percentage, showing the value has gone down instead of up.

Can I use this to calculate a raise or a price increase?

Yes. Set the old salary or price as the from-value, and the new salary or price as the to-value, and the calculator shows the percentage increase.
