How to use the car lease calculator

  1. Enter the monthly payment from the lease agreement.
  2. Enter the term in months — common agreements run 24, 36 or 48 months.
  3. Enter any upfront cost or down payment. Set it to 0 if the agreement doesn't have one.

How the total cost is calculated

The calculator multiplies the monthly payment by the number of months, and adds the upfront cost:

Total cost = Upfront cost + (Monthly payment × Term)

With a monthly payment of $450 over 36 months and $2,000 upfront, the total cost is $2,000 + 36 × $450 = $18,200.

Note: This calculator doesn't show any additional costs such as excess mileage, damage deductibles, insurance or service, which often come on top of the lease agreement itself. Check the agreement terms for a full overview of costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is leasing cheaper than buying a car?

It depends on the car's depreciation, interest rates, and how long you plan to keep the car. Leasing often gives a lower monthly expense, but you don't own the car at the end of the agreement.

What happens if I drive more miles than agreed?

Most lease agreements have a mileage limit. If you drive more, you'll normally have to pay an additional rate per mile over the limit at the end of the agreement.
