How to use the hedge plant calculator

  1. Enter how many meters of hedge you're planting.
  2. Enter the desired spacing between each plant, in centimeters.
  3. Choose whether you're planting in 1 row or 2 staggered rows, and see how many plants you need in total.

How the number of plants is calculated

The calculator works out how many plants fit per meter, and multiplies by the hedge length and number of rows:

Number of plants = (Hedge length ÷ Spacing) × Number of rows

Tighter plant spacing gives a thicker, more defined hedge sooner, but costs more since you need more plants. Two staggered rows give a thicker, more solid and light-blocking hedge than a single row, but also roughly double the number of plants needed.

Note: Recommended plant spacing varies by species — always check the recommendation for your specific hedge plant (beech, arborvitae and privet, for example, have different recommended spacings).

Frequently asked questions

How closely should I plant a hedge?

It varies by species, but many common hedge plants are planted with 25–40 cm spacing. Tighter planting gives a thicker hedge sooner, but costs more and can require more pruning over time.

Is it worth planting two rows?

Two staggered rows give a thicker and more solid hedge sooner than a single row, and are common for tall or light-blocking hedges. The downside is that you need roughly double the number of plants.

What time of year should I plant a hedge?

Spring and fall are usually best, when the ground isn't frozen and the plants avoid the harshest summer heat right after planting. Bare-root plants are often planted in fall or early spring.
