How to use the inflation calculator

  1. Enter the amount you want to adjust for inflation.
  2. Enter which year the amount is from, and which year you want to convert it to.
  3. Enter the expected or historical average annual inflation — the calculator shows the adjusted amount.

How the inflation adjustment is calculated

The calculator uses a fixed annual inflation rate to adjust the amount, with a compounding effect over the number of years:

Adjusted amount = Amount × (1 + inflation)number of years

If "to year" is earlier than "from year", the calculator works backwards and shows what the amount was equivalent to in an earlier year.

Note: The calculator uses a fixed inflation rate you choose yourself, not actual historical consumer price index figures, which vary from year to year. For precise historical purchasing power, use your country's official statistics agency's price calculator. This calculator is best suited for estimates and future projections.

Frequently asked questions

Which inflation rate should I use?

Most central banks target around 2% inflation over time, but actual inflation has varied a lot year to year. For historical calculations, your country's official consumer price index gives more accurate figures than a fixed rate.

Why does purchasing power get lower when the amount grows?

The amount in currency grows, but purchasing power (how much you actually get for the money) is the opposite perspective: if you look at a fixed amount today compared to earlier, inflation has reduced how much it can buy.
