The calculator uses a fixed annual inflation rate to adjust the amount, with a compounding effect over the number of years:
If "to year" is earlier than "from year", the calculator works backwards and shows what the amount was equivalent to in an earlier year.
Most central banks target around 2% inflation over time, but actual inflation has varied a lot year to year. For historical calculations, your country's official consumer price index gives more accurate figures than a fixed rate.
The amount in currency grows, but purchasing power (how much you actually get for the money) is the opposite perspective: if you look at a fixed amount today compared to earlier, inflation has reduced how much it can buy.
