How to use the commute deduction calculator

  1. Enter the distance between your home and your workplace, one way, in kilometers.
  2. Enter how many days a year you normally commute to work.
  3. The calculator works out the total distance driven and how large a deduction you can claim on your tax return.

How the commute deduction is calculated

First the total distance driven for the year is calculated, then it's multiplied by the per-km rate. Finally the floor deduction is subtracted, and the deduction is capped at an upper limit:

Total km = Distance × 2 × Workdays
Base = Total km × 1.90 kr
Deduction = Base − 12,000 kr (max 120,000 kr, minimum 0 kr)

With 25 km one way and 230 workdays, the total distance driven is 11,500 km, the base is 21,850 kr, and the deduction after the floor is 21,850 − 12,000 = 9,850 kr.

2026 rates: Per-km rate 1.90 kr/km, floor deduction 12,000 kr, and maximum deduction 120,000 kr. These Norwegian rates are set annually by the Storting (Parliament) and can change — always check current rates at skatteetaten.no before claiming the deduction on your tax return. Frequently asked questions

What is the floor deduction in the commute deduction?

The floor deduction is an amount you must commute for before the deduction starts counting. Only the part of the calculated base that exceeds the floor deduction is given as a deduction on your tax return.

Do I get the commute deduction regardless of which mode of transport I use?

Yes, the commute deduction is calculated from distance regardless of whether you drive, cycle, walk or use public transport. There are, however, some special rules for long distances and use of flights or ferries.

Do I have to fill in the commute deduction myself?

The Norwegian tax authority (Skatteetaten) often doesn't pre-fill the commute deduction automatically. You usually have to enter it yourself on your tax return, based on the actual distance and number of commute days through the year.
