How to use the electricity cost calculator

  1. Enter your approximate electricity consumption in kWh per month (check your electricity bill or meter app).
  2. Choose your price zone (NO1–NO5) — the calculator fetches today's average spot price for the zone automatically. You can override it if you want to use a different price.
  3. Enter grid rent per kWh and the fixed fee. The calculator shows the cost under spot price, spot price with subsidy, and Norgespris side by side, and points out which is cheapest for you.

How the electricity cost is calculated

Grid cost = Consumption × Grid rent + Fixed fee
Spot price: Power cost = Consumption × Spot price
Spot + subsidy: Power cost = Consumption × Spot price − Subsidy
Norgespris: Power cost = Consumption × 50 øre/kWh (up to 5,000 kWh/month)

Norway's electricity subsidy (strømstøtte) applies automatically if you haven't actively chosen Norgespris: the state covers 90 % of the spot price above a threshold of 96.25 øre/kWh (incl. VAT), for the first 5,000 kWh you use per month.

Norgespris is an optional, fixed price of 50 øre/kWh (incl. VAT) you can order via Elhub instead of the ordinary electricity subsidy. It applies to the first 5,000 kWh/month for homes (1,000 kWh/month for cabins) — consumption beyond this is paid at spot price. The scheme runs through December 31, 2026.

Example with 1,500 kWh consumption, a spot price of 1.50 kr/kWh and 900 kr in grid rent: pure spot price gives 3,150 kr, spot price with subsidy gives about 2,424 kr, and Norgespris gives 1,650 kr — Norgespris is clearly cheapest when the spot price is high. If the spot price is low (below the Norgespris rate), pure spot price or the subsidy can instead be more favorable.

Limitation: Grid rent varies by grid company, season and location, and must be entered manually — it isn't fetched automatically. The spot price fetched is today's average for the chosen price zone, not necessarily the price in this exact hour. Any markup or discounts from your electricity supplier aren't included. This calculator applies to Norway's electricity market only.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between electricity price and grid rent?

The electricity price (spot price) is what you pay for the power itself. Grid rent is what you pay the grid company to transport the electricity to your home, and is independent of which electricity supplier or contract type (spot price, subsidy, Norgespris) you choose.

Should I choose Norgespris or the ordinary electricity subsidy?

It depends on the spot price. Norgespris gives a fixed price no matter how much the spot price fluctuates, while the subsidy covers 90 % of the price above a threshold — but lets you keep the benefit when the spot price is low. This calculator compares both for your consumption, so you can see what actually pays off.

What happens if I use more than 5,000 kWh a month?

Both Norgespris and the electricity subsidy are capped at the first 5,000 kWh you use per month. Consumption beyond this is paid at the ordinary spot price with no subsidy or fixed price of any kind.
