How to use the grade average calculator

  1. Choose the standard average for upper secondary school (VGS), or weighted average when subjects have different scope.
  2. Enter each subject and your grade (1–6). Only fill in weight in weighted mode.
  3. Add more subjects with "+ Add subject".
  4. The calculator shows your grade average and grade points (average × 10).

How the grade average is calculated

Standard average = sum of grades ÷ number of grades
Weighted average = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ weight
Grade points = Grade average × 10

On a standard Norwegian upper-secondary diploma (vitnemål), every grade counts equally. In weighted mode, a subject with weight 5 counts five times as much as a subject with weight 1; the weight could for example be course hours or credit points.

Note: Standard mode follows the principle for an upper secondary diploma: an unweighted average of the grades × 10. Weighted mode can be used for higher education transcripts or other contexts where subjects should count by scope. The calculator doesn't cover bonus points, quotas or other Norwegian university admission rules.

Frequently asked questions

How is the grade average calculated for Norwegian upper secondary school?

For a standard upper-secondary diploma, all grades are added together and divided by the number of grades. Each grade counts equally, and grade points are the average multiplied by 10.

Does Norway's university admission system use a weighted or unweighted average?

It depends on what you're applying with. For a standard upper-secondary diploma, grade points are a simple, unweighted average of all grades × 10. For transcripts from higher education (like a bachelor's degree), the average is instead weighted by credit points/scope — the same principle this calculator uses.

What's the difference between grade average and grade points?

Grade points are the grade average multiplied by 10. The grade average (1–6) is what you typically see on the diploma, while grade points are the number format used in admission point calculations.

How do I find the course hours for a subject?

Course hours are listed in the subject's curriculum (weekly/annual hours), and are often shown on your diploma or competence certificate. If you don't have the exact number, you can use the number of weekly hours as a reasonable approximation.
