MD5 Hash Generator
Type or paste text — the MD5 hash is calculated automatically, entirely in your own browser.
How to use the MD5 generator
- Type or paste the text you want to hash.
- The MD5 hash (32 hexadecimal characters) is calculated automatically as you type.
- Press "Copy hash" to put the result on your clipboard.
What is MD5?
MD5 is an older cryptographic hash function that takes any text and computes a fixed-length 128-bit value (32 hexadecimal characters). It's still used for simple checksums and compatibility with older systems and file formats that expect an MD5 value.
MD5 is considered cryptographically broken and should not be used for security-critical purposes like password storage or digital signatures — weaknesses in the algorithm make it possible to construct two different texts with the same MD5 hash (a collision). For those purposes, use SHA-256 instead, or ideally a dedicated password-hashing algorithm like bcrypt or Argon2.
Frequently asked questions
Is MD5 safe to use for passwords?
No. MD5 is fast to compute and has known collision weaknesses, making it unsuitable for password storage or other security-critical purposes. Use a dedicated algorithm like bcrypt or Argon2 instead.
Why use MD5 at all?
For non-security-critical purposes like checking that a downloaded file wasn't corrupted in transfer, or for compatibility with older systems that specifically expect the MD5 format.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The entire calculation happens in your own browser with JavaScript — the text never leaves your device.
