How to use the normal force calculator

  1. Enter the mass of the object.
  2. Enter the incline angle of the surface — 0° for flat ground.
  3. The normal force updates automatically.

What is normal force?

Normal force is the force a surface exerts perpendicular to an object resting on it, counteracting the object's weight so it doesn't sink through the surface. On flat, horizontal ground, the normal force simply equals the weight: N = m × g. On an incline, the normal force becomes smaller, since only the component of the weight perpendicular to the incline is counteracted: N = m × g × cos(θ), where θ is the incline angle.

Note: this calculator uses standard Earth gravitational acceleration, g = 9.81 m/s². The normal force is always perpendicular to the surface, not straight up, when the surface is tilted.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the normal force decrease on an incline?

Because only the component of the weight that's perpendicular to the incline is counteracted by the surface — the rest of the weight acts along the incline (and is what causes objects to slide or roll downhill). The steeper the incline, the smaller the perpendicular component, and the lower the normal force.

What is normal force used for?

Normal force is essential for calculating friction force (F = μ × N) — see our friction calculator — since friction force is always proportional to the normal force between two surfaces.

Is normal force the same as weight?

Only on flat, horizontal ground are they numerically equal. On an incline, the normal force is always less than the weight, since it only counteracts the perpendicular component of the weight.
