Estimate child support (barnebidrag) based on the cost of raising the child, both parents' income, the paying parent's ability to pay, and overnight stays — using the same model NAV uses.
Estimated child support
3,490 kr/mo
after overnight-stay deduction
Cost of raising the child
9,322 kr/mo
Overnight-stay deduction
1,690 kr/mo
The support amount is limited by the paying parent's ability to pay, not by the income split alone.
Enter the child's age and how many nights a month the child spends with the paying parent.
Enter gross annual income for both parents and the paying parent's marital status.
The calculator shows an estimated support amount based on NAV's calculation model.
How child support is calculated
The calculation follows five steps set out in Norway's child support regulation (forskrift om fastsetjing av fostringstilskot):
Cost of raising the child = age-tiered living expenses plus a fixed housing-cost supplement, minus child benefit (only for children under 18).
Income split: the cost is split between the parents in proportion to their income.
5/6 cap: the paying parent should never pay more than 5/6 of the cost of raising the child.
Ability to pay: the support amount can't exceed what the paying parent actually has left after tax and standard deductions for their own living and housing costs. It also can't exceed 25 % of the paying parent's income.
Overnight-stay deduction is subtracted last, after all the caps above have already been applied.
Note: This is a simplified estimate, not an official decision. The calculator uses a standardized tax calculation and doesn't account for other children with the same paying parent, other children in the paying parent's household, or special circumstances NAV can consider in an individual case. Use NAV's own child support calculator (in Norwegian) for a figure you can rely on in an actual case. This calculator applies to the Norwegian child support model only.
Frequently asked questions
What is "ability to pay"?
Ability to pay ("bidragsevne") is how much the paying parent actually has left to pay support with, after tax and a standardized deduction for their own living and housing costs have been subtracted from their income. The support amount can never be set higher than the ability to pay allows, even if the income split alone would give a higher amount.
Why is the overnight-stay deduction applied last?
The regulation specifies that the overnight-stay deduction is subtracted from the support amount calculated after the income split, the 5/6 cap, the ability-to-pay cap and the 25 % cap have already been applied — not earlier in the calculation.
Why is child benefit subtracted from the cost of raising the child?
Because the receiving parent normally already gets child benefit for the child, the total cost to be split between the parents is reduced by the child benefit rate — for children under 18. For children aged 18 or older, no such deduction is made.
