How to use the parental benefit calculator
- Enter your annual income before tax.
- The calculator works out your parental benefit base, capped at 6 times the base amount (6G).
- Compare the estimated monthly payout at 100 % coverage over 49 weeks, or 80 % coverage over 61 weeks and 1 day.
How parental benefit is calculated
100 % coverage: Base ÷ (49 weeks ÷ 4.345) per month
80 % coverage: (Base × 0.8) ÷ (61.14 weeks ÷ 4.345) per month
When applying for parental benefit, parents in Norway choose between a shorter period with full salary compensation (100 % coverage for 49 weeks), or a longer period with reduced compensation (80 % coverage for 61 weeks and 1 day). The amount is split between the mother and father/co-parent according to the quota rules and the agreement between them.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between 100 % and 80 % coverage?
At 100 % coverage you get full salary compensation (up to 6G), but the period is shorter — 49 weeks. At 80 % coverage you get a slightly lower share of your income, but the period is extended to 61 weeks and 1 day.
Do I need to have worked a certain period to be entitled to parental benefit?
Yes, the general rule is that you must have been in paid work for at least 6 of the last 10 months before your parental benefit period starts, with an income of at least half the base amount.
What happens if my income is above 6G?
Parental benefit is only calculated on income up to 6 times the base amount (6G). Income above this cap doesn't give higher parental benefit, unless your employer covers the difference as a voluntary arrangement.
