How to use the electricity subsidy calculator

  1. Enter the approximate average spot price for the period, in kr/kWh excluding VAT (available from, e.g., Nord Pool or your electricity supplier).
  2. Enter your electricity consumption in kWh for the same period.
  3. The calculator shows the approximate electricity subsidy, and what you end up paying per kWh after the subsidy.

How the electricity subsidy is calculated

The Norwegian state covers 90 % of the power price above a set threshold, set at 77 øre/kWh (0.77 kr/kWh) excluding VAT as of January 1, 2026:

Subsidy per kWh = (Spot price − 0.77) × 90 %, only for the price above the threshold
Price after subsidy = Spot price − Subsidy per kWh

In reality, the subsidy is calculated hour by hour by the grid company, based on the actual spot price in your price zone each individual hour, and is automatically deducted from your grid rent invoice. This calculator uses a simplified average for the whole period as an approximation, since the spot price varies a lot hour by hour.

An alternative to the ordinary electricity subsidy is Norgespris — a fixed price of 40 øre/kWh (0.40 kr/kWh) excluding VAT, which you can choose instead. Since the subsidy scheme in any case gives you at least the threshold price (0.77 kr/kWh) in high-price hours, Norgespris will often be cheaper in exactly those expensive periods. The downside is that you don't benefit from very low spot prices — for example at night or in periods with lots of wind and hydropower — that you would otherwise pay directly for.

Important: This is a simplified calculation based on a period average, not the actual hourly price. The threshold (0.77 kr/kWh) and subsidy percentage (90 %) are set by the Norwegian Parliament and can change. Check your grid rent invoice for the actual subsidy paid out. This calculator applies to Norway's electricity subsidy scheme only.

Frequently asked questions

What's the electricity subsidy threshold right now?

As of January 1, 2026, the threshold is 77 øre/kWh (0.77 kr/kWh) excluding VAT. The state covers 90 % of the price above this level. The threshold is set by the Norwegian Parliament and can change.

Is the subsidy calculated hour by hour or as a monthly average?

The grid company calculates the subsidy hour by hour, based on the actual spot price in your price zone each hour. This calculator uses a simplified average for the whole period as an approximation — the actual subsidy on your invoice may therefore differ somewhat.

What is Norgespris, and is it better than the electricity subsidy?

Norgespris is an alternative with a fixed price (40 øre/kWh excluding VAT) you can choose instead of the ordinary electricity subsidy. It's often cheaper during periods of high spot prices, but you lose the benefit of very low prices during periods with a large power surplus.
