How to use the mileage allowance calculator

  1. Enter the number of kilometers you've driven your own car for work.
  2. Enter the rate that applies to you — check your agreement with your employer or Norway's state rates.
  3. The calculator shows the total allowance.

How the allowance is calculated

The allowance is simply the number of kilometers multiplied by the rate:

Allowance = Number of km × Rate per km

Drive 120 km at a rate of 3.50 kr/km, and you get 120 × 3.50 = 420 kr in allowance.

Limitation: The rate can vary between employers. In Norway, part of the allowance can be taxable if it exceeds the tax-free rate set by the state — check your agreement with your employer. This calculator uses Norwegian rates and isn't applicable to other countries' mileage-reimbursement rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is mileage allowance tax-free?

Allowance up to the tax-free rate set by the state is normally tax-free. If the employer pays more than this rate, the excess amount can be taxable.

Yes, to document the driving you should keep a mileage log with the date, purpose, start and end address, and the number of kilometers for each work trip.

Are "kjøregodtgjørelse" and "kilometergodtgjørelse" the same thing?

Yes, they're two Norwegian names for the same thing: the compensation you get per kilometer driven for using your own car for work.
