How to use the used car value calculator

  1. Enter what the car cost new.
  2. Enter the car's age in years.
  3. Enter how many kilometers the car has driven in total.
  4. See the estimated value today and the value loss in kroner and percent.

How the value is calculated

Value loss, year 1: approx. 20 %
Value loss, years 2-5: approx. 14 % per year
Value loss, year 6+: approx. 10 % per year

The calculator uses a stepped model where the car loses the most value in its first year, somewhat less in the following years, and even less as it gets older. If you drive significantly more or less than the average (approx. 12,000 km a year), the value is adjusted up or down accordingly.

Limitation: This is a rough estimate based on an average depreciation curve, not the car's actual make, model, condition or the current market. This depreciation pattern is based on Norwegian used-car market figures and won't necessarily match other countries. Use an appraisal service or a real market valuation before you buy or sell.

Frequently asked questions

How much value does a new car lose in its first year?

Typically around 20 %, according to figures often cited by Norwegian car-industry sources. After that, the annual percentage decline eases somewhat, but the car keeps losing value every year.

Why is the value adjusted for mileage?

A car that has driven significantly more than the average for its age (about 12,000 km/year) is normally more worn and worth somewhat less, while a car with low mileage for its age is typically worth somewhat more.

Does this apply to electric cars too?

Electric cars can have a different depreciation pattern than petrol and diesel cars, partly because battery technology is evolving quickly and EV tax rules have changed over time. This calculator uses the same simplified model for all car types, so the result for EVs should be read with even more caution.

Can I use this to set a price when I sell my car?

No, not alone. Use the result as a starting point, but check actual listings for comparable cars (make, model, model year, mileage and condition) to set a realistic price.
