Choose the correct VAT rate — 25% is Norway's standard rate.
Choose whether the amount you entered already includes VAT (e.g. from a receipt), or is without VAT (e.g. a quoted price) — the calculator works out the right direction automatically.
How VAT is calculated
If the amount is without VAT, the calculator adds the VAT rate directly:
VAT amount = Amount without VAT × (Rate ÷ 100)
If the amount is including VAT (as on a receipt), the VAT share must be worked out backward, since the rate applies to the amount without VAT:
Amount without VAT = Amount with VAT ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
Note: Always check which rate applies to the specific goods or services you're calculating — Norwegian VAT rates can change, and some goods and services are fully exempt from VAT.

Frequently asked questions
Why isn't the VAT share 25% of the amount with VAT?
Because the 25% rate applies to the amount without VAT, not the total amount. The VAT share of an amount including 25% VAT is therefore 20% of the total, not 25%.
Which goods have a reduced VAT rate in Norway?
Food and groceries have 15% VAT, while passenger transport, cinema, museums and certain cultural experiences have 12% VAT. Most other goods and services have the standard rate of 25%.
