How to use the working days calculator

  1. Choose the start date.
  2. Choose the end date.
  3. The calculator automatically counts Monday–Friday in the period, then subtracts Norwegian public holidays that fall on a weekday.

How working days are calculated

The calculator goes through each day in the period and counts it as a working day if it isn't a Saturday or Sunday. It then subtracts one day for each public holiday that falls on one of those working days:

Working days = Weekdays (Mon–Fri) − Holidays on a weekday

Most Norwegian public holidays have fixed dates, but several of them — Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day and Whit Monday — are calculated from Easter Sunday, which is a movable holiday. Easter follows the lunar calendar: Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, so it can fall anywhere between late March and late April. The calculator uses a standard astronomical formula (the Meeus/Jones/Butcher algorithm) to find the date for a given year.

The holidays included are: January 1 (New Year's Day), Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May 1 (Labour Day), May 17 (Constitution Day), Ascension Day, Whit Monday, December 25 (Christmas Day) and December 26 (Boxing Day). Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday always fall on a Sunday, so they don't need to be counted separately since Sundays are already outside the working days.

Note: The calculator covers official public holidays in Norway. It doesn't account for company-specific days off that some employers grant (for example Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve), or local and regional observances.

Frequently asked questions

Which holidays are included in the calculation?

New Year's Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day (May 1), Constitution Day (May 17), Ascension Day, Whit Monday, and Christmas Day/Boxing Day (Dec 25–26). Holidays that always fall on a Sunday (Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday) aren't counted separately, since Sundays are already excluded as weekend.

Why does Easter fall on a different date each year?

Easter is tied to the phases of the moon, not a fixed calendar date. Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, which means Easter can fall anywhere between late March and late April from year to year.

Does the calculator account for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve?

No. Christmas Eve (December 24) and New Year's Eve (December 31) are not official public holidays in Norway, even though many companies give employees time off or reduced hours on these days as a workplace policy. Check with your employer for such local arrangements.
