How to use the calculator

  1. Enter how many guests are coming.
  2. Enter how many hours the party lasts.
  3. Enter what share of the guests drink alcohol — the calculator shows how much alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink you should have on hand.

How the drink quantity is calculated

The calculator starts from a common rule of thumb of about one drink per person per hour for those drinking alcohol:

Alcoholic drinks = Drinking guests × Hours × 1
Wine bottles ≈ Alcoholic drinks ÷ 5 (per 750 ml bottle)

Guests who don't drink alcohol are counted at the same pace in non-alcoholic drinks, while those who do drink alcohol are also counted for half a non-alcoholic drink or water per hour — people often alternate between alcohol and non-alcohol through the evening. For long evenings with lots of dancing and activity, plan a bit extra, since thirst increases.

Note: This is only a general estimate — adjust for your guests' own habits, weather (hot weather means more drinking), and the type of event. Always serve alcohol responsibly, and make sure to offer good non-alcoholic options for all guests.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I plan per guest per hour?

A common planning rule is about one drink per hour for each guest who drinks alcohol. It's only a starting point — adjust based on what you know about your guests' habits.

Should I buy more than the calculator shows?

It can be worth erring on the generous side, especially for long evenings with lots of dancing and activity, or in hot weather where guests drink more. Unopened bottles can usually be returned or used later.

Why should I offer plenty of non-alcoholic options too?

Not all guests drink alcohol, and even those who do often alternate with non-alcoholic drinks or water through the evening. Good non-alcoholic options make the party better for everyone and help guests stay hydrated.
