How to use the calculator

  1. Enter how many people in your closest family you'll buy gifts for, and how much you plan to spend per gift.
  2. Do the same for friends and coworkers/others.
  3. The calculator shows your total Christmas gift budget, split across the three groups.

How the budget is calculated

The calculator multiplies the number of people by the amount per gift for each group, and adds up the totals:

Total budget = (Family: Count × $) + (Friends: Count × $) + (Coworkers: Count × $)

It can pay off to set a total budget early in December, before holiday shopping gets into full swing — it makes it easier to avoid impulse buys and keep track along the way.

Note: The amounts in the calculator are only examples — adjust them to your own finances and family traditions. Consider setting a maximum amount per gift ahead of time to stay within budget.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a realistic Christmas gift budget?

Start from what you spent in previous years, and compare it to what you can afford this year. Set a fixed amount per person or group, and try to stick to it throughout your holiday shopping.

Should I include gifts for children separately?

Yes, it can give you a clearer overview to put children in their own group if you buy more or pricier gifts for them than for adults. You could, for example, use the "Closest family" field for this, or adjust the amounts in the other groups.

What's a good way to stick to the budget?

Write down a gift list with a planned amount per person before you start shopping, and check items off as gifts are bought. This makes it easier to see whether you're on track to stay within the total budget.
