Step Length Calculator

Find your estimated step length from your height, and convert a given number of steps to actual distance walked — the same principle pedometer apps use.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter your height.
  2. Choose gender (slightly affects the height-to-step-length ratio).
  3. Enter a number of steps to convert to distance.

How it's calculated

Step length ≈ height × 0.415 (men) or × 0.413 (women)

This is the same industry-standard approximation most pedometer apps and watches use to estimate step length from height, since actual step length is impractical to measure directly for most people. Distance is then calculated as number of steps × step length.

Limitations: A rough estimate — actual step length varies with walking speed, leg length, and individual differences beyond height alone.

Stride and step are two different measurements

The terms are used interchangeably in everyday speech, but they mean different things in gait analysis. A step is the distance from one foot striking the ground to the other foot striking, while a stride — one full gait cycle — is the distance from one foot striking to that same foot striking again, which is two steps. A stride is therefore roughly twice a step, and confusing the two introduces a factor-of-two error.

Activity trackers normally count steps, not strides. That is worth knowing when comparing figures from different sources, or when converting between step count and distance: using stride length where step length was intended will halve or double the result depending on which way the mistake goes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the formula slightly different for men and women?

Because the statistical relationship between height and leg length/step length differs slightly between genders on average — the difference is small (0.415 vs. 0.413).

Is this the same as what my pedometer app uses?

Yes, most pedometer apps use exactly this type of height-based formula with similar factors, unless they use more advanced GPS or sensor-based measurement.

Why is steps-to-distance optional?

Because the step length alone is useful information on its own, e.g. to check whether a step-count goal makes sense for your build.
