How to use the toll calculator

  1. Enter roughly how many toll passages you have per month.
  2. Enter the average price per passage — this varies between toll stations and vehicle type.
  3. Enter the tag discount that applies — most Norwegian toll operators give around 20% discount with a valid AutoPASS tag.

How the toll cost is calculated

The calculator first works out the total cost without discount, then subtracts the tag discount:

Cost without tag = Passages × Price per passage
Cost with tag = Cost without tag × (1 − Discount ÷ 100)
Note: Norway's toll system (bompenger) uses electronic AutoPASS tags read automatically as you drive through — there are no toll booths to stop at. Many toll operators also have a monthly passage cap (often around 60–80) above which you stop paying, and some have an hourly rule giving a free passage if you pass through again within an hour. This calculator doesn't account for such rules — check with the specific toll operator for the exact amount. Discount rates and caps are set individually by each toll project and can differ from what's typical elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always get a discount with a tag?

Most toll operators in Norway give a discount (often around 20%) when using a valid AutoPASS tag with a correctly registered vehicle and payment agreement. The discount rate can vary between operators.

What is a passage cap?

Many toll rings have a cap on how many passages you pay for per month (often around 60–80), even if you drive through more times than that. Check the specific toll operator's rules.

Do I need to buy an AutoPASS tag if I'm just visiting Norway?

Foreign visitors can often pay without a tag via invoice based on license plate recognition, though this usually means no discount. If you'll be driving in Norway regularly, an AutoPASS tag (available to non-residents too) is worth considering for the discount and convenience.
