How to use the wind chill calculator

  1. Enter the air temperature in °C.
  2. Enter the wind speed in km/h.
  3. The feels-like temperature (wind chill) updates automatically.

Why does it feel colder when it's windy?

Wind blows away the thin layer of warm air your skin heats up around itself, replacing it faster with cold air. Your body loses heat faster than in still conditions at the same air temperature — even though the temperature on the thermometer hasn't actually changed.

Note: wind chill is only a meaningful, defined value at temperatures of 10 °C or below and wind above 4.8 km/h. Outside that range, the calculator shows the actual air temperature unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't the calculator work at warm temperatures?

Because wind chill as a phenomenon is only defined for cold temperatures (10 °C or below) — at warmer temperatures, it's humidity that affects how hot it feels instead. See our heat index calculator for that.

Is wind chill dangerous?

Yes — strong wind chill significantly increases the risk of frostbite, since exposed skin loses heat faster than in still cold conditions. Health authorities recommend extra precautions (covering skin, reducing time outdoors) when wind chill is substantially lower than the actual air temperature.

Why does the formula use km/h and not mph?

Because the official wind chill formula from US and Canadian weather authorities is calibrated with wind speed in km/h (originally derived from mph). Use our speed converter if you have the wind speed in another unit.
