How to use the calculator

  1. Measure the width of the bedroom where the bed will go.
  2. Choose whether 1 or 2 people will sleep in the bed.
  3. The calculator suggests the largest standard bed size that leaves at least 60 cm (about 2 ft) of walkway clearance on each side.

Standard bed sizes

Common bed sizes are 90×200 cm / Twin (single), 120×200 cm (a bit wider than twin), 140×200 cm / Full (small double), 160×200 cm / Queen (standard double), and 180×200 cm / King. The calculator subtracts 60 cm of clearance on each side (120 cm total) from the room width to find the max bed width, and requires at least 140 cm width if two people will sleep in the bed.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting a recommendation for 2 people?

The room is likely too narrow to fit the smallest double bed width (140 cm) with the recommended clearance on both sides. Consider whether clearance can be reduced on one side (e.g. if the bed is against a wall).

Is 60 cm of clearance enough?

60 cm is considered a practical minimum for walking past the bed and making it. If you have the space, 70–80 cm is more comfortable.

Does the calculator account for the room's length?

No, only the width — make sure the room is also long enough for the bed's length (usually 200 cm) plus room for any other furniture.
