How to use the calculator

  1. Measure the length of the wall where the sofa will sit.
  2. Enter how much walkway clearance you want in front of the sofa (90 cm/3 ft is a common minimum for comfortable movement).
  3. The calculator subtracts the clearance from the room length to find the max recommended sofa length.

About clearance and sofa depth

90 cm (about 3 feet) is often considered a practical minimum for walking space between a sofa and other furniture or a walkway. If you want more comfortable space for, say, a coffee-table passage, 100–120 cm can be more comfortable.

Standard sofa depth typically ranges from 85 to 100 cm — the calculator shows 90 cm as a common starting point, but deep lounge sofas can reach up to 110 cm.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the whole wall or just the part the sofa covers?

Measure the entire available wall width where the sofa could realistically sit — the calculator works out max sofa length assuming the rest of the space is used for walkway clearance in front.

What if I have other furniture along the same wall?

Subtract the space other furniture (like a side table or bookshelf) takes up from the room length before using the calculator, so you're only calculating the free space for the sofa itself.

Why does it say "doesn't fit" for the max sofa length?

It means the desired clearance is greater than or equal to the entire room length — reduce the clearance requirement or consider a smaller piece of furniture.
