How to use the commute cost calculator

  1. Enter the distance to work, one way, in kilometers.
  2. Enter how many days per week you commute.
  3. Enter your vehicle's consumption per 100 km (liters for a gas car, kWh for an EV) and the price per unit.

How commute cost is calculated

Km per week = Distance one way × 2 × Days per week
Cost per week = (Km per week ÷ 100) × Consumption × Price

The calculator then converts the cost to a monthly (× 4.33 weeks) and yearly (× 52 weeks) figure. This only covers the fuel/electricity cost — tolls, parking, service and depreciation come on top and vary a lot from person to person.

Frequently asked questions

What consumption figure should I use?

Use the manufacturer's stated average consumption as a starting point, but feel free to adjust based on your own experience — actual consumption often differs from the stated figure, especially in cold weather or with a lot of city driving.

Does this cover the full cost of owning the car?

No, the calculator only shows the fuel/electricity cost of the commute itself. Other costs like insurance, service, tires, depreciation, and any tolls or parking fees come on top.

Can I use this for an EV?

Yes, enter electricity consumption in kWh per 100 km instead of fuel consumption, and price per kWh instead of price per liter — the calculation works the same regardless of fuel type.
