How to use the exam requirement calculator

  1. Find your current weighted average and total course hours without the exam subject — use the grade average calculator if you don't have this figure.
  2. Enter the course hours for the subject you're being examined in, and the total average you want to reach.
  3. The calculator solves the equation backward and shows what grade you need.

How the exam requirement is calculated

This is the grade average formula solved backward for the unknown exam grade:

Required exam grade = (Target average × Total course hours − Current average × Current course hours) ÷ Exam subject's course hours

If the exam subject's course hours are small relative to all your other subjects, it will take a very high (or impossible) grade to move the average much. If the course hours are large, the exam has a correspondingly bigger impact.

Note: This is a general weighted-average calculation, not Norway's official Samordna Opptak point calculation for a standard upper-secondary diploma (which uses an unweighted average). Use the calculator for planning, not as a guarantee of your actual university admission points.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't know my course hours?

Use the number of weekly hours in the subject as an approximation — it usually gives a reasonable result, even though it isn't identical to the school's official course-hour count.

What does it mean if the grade I need is above 6?

It means the target average isn't achievable with this exam subject alone, since the subject weighs too little in the total average — even the top grade of 6 doesn't move the average far enough.

Can I use this for several exams at once?

The calculator solves for one exam subject at a time. If you have several exams, you can add together their course hours in "Course hours for the exam subject" if you assume the same grade on all of them, but the result will be more accurate if you calculate them one by one.
