How to use the holiday pay calculator

  1. Enter the gross salary you had in the earning year (the year before you take the vacation).
  2. Choose the holiday pay rate that applies to you — check your employment or collective agreement if you're unsure.
  3. The result shows the holiday pay you've earned, normally paid out in June.

How holiday pay is calculated

In Norway you earn holiday pay the year before you take vacation, and it's calculated as a percentage of gross salary from the earning year — not the salary you have when the vacation is actually taken.

Holiday pay = Gross salary, earning year × Holiday pay rate

If you earned 480,000 kr in the earning year and have a 12 % holiday pay rate, you get 480,000 × 0.12 = 57,600 kr in holiday pay.

Which rate applies to me?

Limitation: For employees over 60, the 2.3-percentage-point supplement only applies to the part of the holiday-pay base that doesn't exceed 6G (six times Norway's National Insurance base amount). This calculator simplifies away that cap and applies the chosen rate to the whole base.
Note: Holiday pay replaces ordinary salary during vacation — you don't get full ordinary salary and holiday pay at the same time in the month you're on vacation. This calculator shows the amount before tax, and applies to Norwegian employment law only.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay tax on holiday pay?

Yes, holiday pay is taxable income. In practice, tax normally isn't withheld from the June holiday-pay payout itself, because the year's tax withholding is spread so that December/June is often tax-free at the point of withholding — but holiday pay still counts toward your total taxable income.

When is holiday pay paid out?

Most employers pay out holiday pay in connection with the main vacation, usually in June. This can vary from employer to employer.

Do I get holiday pay on bonuses and overtime?

Yes, holiday pay is normally calculated on all taxable employment income from the earning year, including bonuses and overtime pay, with some exceptions depending on the agreement.
