How to use the vacation days calculator

  1. Enter your age and employment percentage.
  2. Enter how many months you worked in the earning year (12 if you worked the full year).
  3. The calculator shows how many vacation days you've earned, including an extra vacation week if you're 60 or older.

How vacation days are calculated

Vacation days = round(25 × months/12 × employment%/100)
At age 60+: Extra week = round(6 × months/12 × employment%/100)

Norway's Holiday Act sets a statutory minimum of 25 working days of vacation a year, where Saturdays count as a working day. That equals 4 weeks and 1 day of vacation. Many employers and collective agreements grant a fifth vacation week on top, bringing the total to 30 working days — but this isn't a statutory minimum, and must be checked in your own employment contract or collective agreement.

Note: The statutory minimum is 25 working days (Norway's Holiday Act, ferieloven). Check your employment contract for whether you've been granted a 5th vacation week, which isn't included in this calculation. This calculator applies to Norwegian employment law only.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between working days and calendar days for vacation?

Working days under the Holiday Act count as every day except Sundays and statutory public holidays — so Saturdays are included. 25 working days therefore equals 4 weeks and 1 day of continuous vacation.

Do I get full vacation if I'm newly hired?

You earn vacation days proportionally to how many months you worked in the earning year. If you're hired partway through the year, you're therefore entitled to fewer vacation days than someone who worked the whole year.

Am I entitled to extra vacation when I turn 60?

Yes. Employees who turn 60 by September 1 of the vacation year are entitled to an extra vacation week (6 working days) in addition to the ordinary vacation, proportional to employment percentage and time worked.
