How to use the sick pay days calculator

  1. Enter the date of the first sick day in the ongoing sick leave.
  2. Enter the date you want to calculate up to (today is pre-filled).
  3. The calculator shows how many of the 16 calendar days in the employer period have been used, and when NAV takes over, if applicable.

How the employer period is calculated

Employer period = 16 calendar days from and including the first sick day

As a general rule, the employer is required to pay sick pay for the first 16 calendar days of a sick leave — this is called the employer period. If the sick leave continues past day 16, NAV normally takes over paying sick pay from day 17 onward.

Important: The employer period is counted in calendar days, not just working days. That means Saturdays, Sundays and any public holidays within the period also count toward the 16 days. This calculator applies to Norwegian employment/welfare law only.

Frequently asked questions

Do Saturday and Sunday count toward the employer period?

Yes. The 16-day employer period is counted in calendar days, not just working days — weekends and any public holidays within the period are included in the count.

What happens when the employer period is over?

From day 17 onward, NAV normally takes over paying sick pay, provided the conditions for sick pay from National Insurance are met and it's been applied for in time.

Does a new employer period start if I get sick again shortly after?

As a general rule, a new employer period starts with a new sick leave. However, if you become sick again within a short time and it's considered the same illness, the rules for a so-called "new employer period" can apply differently. Contact your employer or NAV if you're unsure about your specific case.
