How to use the sick pay calculator

  1. Enter your annual income before tax.
  2. The calculator works out your sick pay base, capped at 6 times the National Insurance base amount (6G).
  3. See the daily rate and estimated monthly payout at full sick leave (100 %).

How sick pay is calculated

Sick pay base = min(annual income, 6 × G)
Daily rate = Sick pay base ÷ 260 working days  ·  Monthly (100 %) = Sick pay base ÷ 12

Norway's National Insurance scheme covers 100 % of your income up to 6 times the base amount (6G, "grunnbeløpet"). Income above this cap doesn't give higher sick pay. For the first 16 calendar days of a sick leave (the employer period), your employer normally pays full salary, after which NAV (Norway's welfare agency) takes over payment from day 17.

Limitation: This is a simplified calculation, and the actual payout depends on agreements, the sick-leave percentage and time worked. Check nav.no or talk to your employer for exact figures. This calculator applies to Norway's National Insurance scheme only.

Frequently asked questions

What is the base amount (G)?

The base amount ("grunnbeløpet") is a figure Norway's National Insurance scheme uses as a starting point to calculate a range of benefits, including sick pay, unemployment benefit and pensions. It's set by NAV and normally adjusted once a year.

Who pays sick pay for the first 16 days?

During the employer period, which lasts the first 16 calendar days of the sick leave, the employer normally pays full salary. From day 17 onward, NAV takes over paying sick pay.

Do I get sick pay with a graded (partial) sick leave?

Yes. With a graded sick leave, for example 50 %, you get sick pay corresponding to the sick-listed share of your position. This calculator shows the amount at 100 % sick leave — scale it down proportionally for partial sick leave.
