The sizing systems do not measure the same thing
European sizes are based on the Paris point, an old unit of two thirds of a centimetre, and measure the length of the last — not the foot. British and American systems use a different unit and a different starting point, and additionally number men's and women's shoes differently. There is therefore no exact conversion between the systems, only approximations, and tables from different sources can disagree by half a size to a full size.
The last — the shape the shoe is built around — also varies between manufacturers, and two shoes in the same stated size can fit quite differently. Width is rarely stated in Europe, while American shoes often carry separate width markings. Use the conversion as a starting point, and measure your foot in centimetres: that is the only measurement directly comparable across systems.
Worked example: EU size 42 corresponds to roughly 26.6 cm of foot length, US men's 9, US women's 10.5 and UK 8. Note that US women's sits one and a half sizes above US men's for the same foot — that is a pure convention, not a difference in foot length. Note too that shoe sizes are not standardised between manufacturers, so the table is a guide rather than a definitive answer.

Why doesn't my shoe size always match this converter?
Because shoe sizes aren't standardized globally the way length units are. Different brands (and even different models from the same brand) can have slightly different last shapes and size charts. Use this converter as a solid starting point, not an exact answer.
What's the difference between US men's and women's sizes?
For the same foot length, a US women's size is usually 1.5 sizes higher than the equivalent US men's size — for example, US men's 9 is roughly equivalent to US women's 10.5.
How do I measure my foot length accurately?
Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark where your longest toe ends, and measure the distance from the wall to the mark in centimeters. Measure both feet — they're rarely identical — and use the larger measurement.
