Metric vs. US volume units
Liters, milliliters and cubic meters are the standard metric volume units used across most of the world. The US customary system instead uses gallons and cups — but note that a US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than a UK imperial gallon (4.546 L), so always check which "gallon" a recipe or spec sheet means.
Worked example: 1 litre is 1 ÷ 3.785411784 = 0.2642 US gallons. Be aware that the imperial gallon is a completely different unit: it holds 4.546 litres against the American 3.785, making it 20 % larger. A «gallon» in an American recipe and in a British one is therefore not the same quantity, and the gap is wide enough to ruin a result.
