What is a slug?

A slug is the readable, URL-friendly part of a web address — for example, "my-new-blog-post" is the slug in example.com/blog/my-new-blog-post. A good slug uses only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, avoids spaces and special characters, and transliterates accented letters to plain ASCII since these aren't safe in every context.

Short, descriptive slugs are easier to read, share, and remember, and are generally considered favorable for SEO compared to long, auto-generated IDs in the URL.

Frequently asked questions

How are punctuation and special characters handled?

Anything that isn't a lowercase letter (a–z) or a digit is replaced with a hyphen, and repeated or leading/trailing hyphens are automatically removed.

Is my text sent to a server?

No, the entire conversion happens locally in your own browser.

Why does length matter for a slug?

Shorter, more focused slugs are easier for people to read and remember, and search engines tend to give diminishing weight to extra keywords stuffed into very long URLs.
