How the tip is calculated

The calculator works out the tip as a percentage of the bill, adds it to the total, and splits it by the number of people if needed:

Tip = Bill × (Tip percentage ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Per person = Total ÷ Number of people

Note: Tipping customs vary widely by country and even by restaurant — some places already add a service charge to the bill, so check before adding a tip on top.

How much should I tip?

Tipping customs vary a lot by country. In the US, 15–20% at a restaurant is common, while in many other countries a smaller amount, rounding up, or no tip at all is standard since service may already be included. Check local customs, or simply enter whatever percentage fits your situation.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
