How to use the calculator

  1. Enter how many guests you're serving.
  2. Choose the type of event — buffet, seated dinner, or a lighter party with snacks. This adjusts how much food is needed per person.
  3. The calculator shows the total food quantity split between protein, sides, salad, bread and dessert.

How the food quantity is calculated

The calculator starts from base quantities per person for a buffet, and adjusts these with a factor based on the type of event:

Quantity per category = Grams per person × Event factor × Number of guests

A balanced buffet needs a bit of everything: protein like meat or fish, sides like potatoes, rice or pasta, salad and vegetables, bread, and finally dessert. Together this gives guests a varied and filling meal.

Note: These are base quantities calculated for a buffet. Adjust down for a seated dinner with fewer courses, and significantly down for a lighter party or cocktail event with just snacks.

Frequently asked questions

How does the type of event affect the quantity?

A seated dinner usually has more courses and smaller portions of each, while a party or cocktail event with snacks needs significantly less food per person than a buffet. The calculator adjusts the base quantities with a factor for this.

Should I adjust for allergies or special diets?

Yes, check with your guests beforehand about allergies or special diets, and make sure there are options within each category that everyone can eat.

What if some guests don't eat meat?

Swap out part of the protein amount for a vegetarian or vegan alternative equal to the number of guests who don't eat meat, and keep the rest of the split as normal.
