How the probation period is calculated
End date = Start date + agreed probation (months) − 1 day
If you start on January 1 with a 6-month probation period, the probation runs through June 30. The calculator counts months calendrically, and automatically adjusts for months with different numbers of days.
Important, on notice period during probation: Under Norway's Working Environment Act § 15-3 (7), the notice period during probation is normally 14 days, unless something else has been agreed in writing in the employment contract. The maximum legal probation period is 6 months. If you've been absent from work during probation (for example due to illness), the probation period can be extended correspondingly if this was agreed in advance and the employer gives written notice before the probation period would otherwise have expired. This calculator applies to Norwegian employment law only.

Frequently asked questions
How long can a probation period be at most?
Under the Working Environment Act § 15-3 (7), probation can be agreed for a maximum of 6 months. If you've been absent from work during probation, it can be extended correspondingly if this was agreed in writing and you're notified before the original probation period would have ended.
What's the notice period during probation?
Normally the notice period is 14 days during probation, unless a longer period has been agreed in writing in the employment contract. This applies to notice from either party, both employer and employee.
What happens if probation isn't agreed in writing?
Probation only applies if it's agreed in writing in the employment agreement. If nothing was agreed, the shorter probation notice-period rules don't apply, and the ordinary notice period applies from the first working day.
