How to use the calculator

  1. Measure the length and width of the room where the rug will go.
  2. The calculator suggests the largest standard rug size that leaves a nice frame of visible floor around it.

Rule of thumb for rug size

A common rule of thumb is to let the rug extend at least 30–40 cm beyond furniture placed on it (or have the front legs of a sofa/chairs on the rug), and leave a small border of visible floor (often 30–50 cm) along the walls. The calculator subtracts a fixed 70 cm total margin (35 cm on each side) from the room size, and finds the largest standard size that still fits.

Keep in mind: this is a general guideline — the final choice also depends on furniture placement and your personal style.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting a recommendation?

The room is likely too small for any of the common standard sizes to fit with the recommended margin. Consider a smaller custom size, or accept a slightly tighter margin than the rule of thumb suggests.

Should the rug cover the whole floor?

Not necessarily — most interior design advice recommends leaving some floor visible along the walls for a tidier, more balanced look, unless you specifically want a wall-to-wall carpet.

Should all furniture legs sit on the rug?

It's often recommended that at least the front legs of sofas and armchairs sit on the rug, so the furniture feels "anchored" to it rather than floating outside it.
