How to use the notice period calculator

  1. Enter how long you've been employed and your age.
  2. Choose the date notice was given (today is pre-filled).
  3. The calculator shows the statutory minimum notice period, when it runs from, and your last working day.

How the notice period is calculated

10+ years employed and 60+ years old: 6 months
10+ years employed: 3 months
5–9 years employed: 2 months
Under 5 years employed: 1 month

Under Norway's Working Environment Act § 15-3, the notice period runs from the 1st of the month after notice was given, and lasts for a given number of full months. The last working day is therefore the last day of the last of those months.

Important: This is the statutory minimum notice period an employer must give. Your employment contract or a collective agreement may entitle you to a longer notice period. If you resign yourself, the general rule is normally 1 month, unless something else has been agreed. This calculator applies to Norwegian employment law only.

Frequently asked questions

Does the same notice period apply if I resign myself?

No. This calculator shows the statutory minimum notice period when the employer gives notice. If you resign yourself, the general rule under the law is normally 1 month, unless something else has been agreed in the employment contract.

When does the notice period start running?

As a general rule, the notice period runs from the 1st of the month after notice was given, not from the notice date itself. If you're given notice in mid-August, the notice period therefore starts on September 1.

Am I entitled to a longer notice period at higher age and seniority?

Yes. Norway's Working Environment Act gives a longer minimum notice period the longer you've been employed, and an extra extension to 6 months if you have at least 10 years of employment and are 60 or older.
