Important: This is a SIMPLIFIED AND ILLUSTRATIVE example using rounded example rates — NOT the actual current rates. Norway's vehicle registration tax has several components (CO2, NOx, and previously a weight component for heavy EVs), and the rates are reset every year in the national budget. Use the Norwegian Tax Administration's official registration tax calculator for an exact amount before buying or importing a vehicle.

How to use the registration tax calculator

  1. Choose fuel type — petrol/diesel or electric.
  2. For petrol and diesel cars: enter the CO2 emissions (g/km), found on the vehicle's registration certificate or from the dealer.
  3. The calculator shows an illustrative estimate of the registration tax. For electric cars the CO2 field isn't used, since EVs have their own rules.

How the illustrative estimate is calculated

The actual vehicle registration tax in Norway consists of several components — including a CO2 component and a NOx component, and has previously also included a weight component. The calculation is progressive and split into brackets, and the rates are set anew each year in the national budget.

This calculator only uses a heavily simplified CO2 component, split into example brackets with rounded kroner rates per gram of CO2 above each threshold. Real tax calculations are far more detailed.

For electric cars, the tax is set to 0 kr in this example. In reality, EVs have their own, simpler rules, but heavy EVs can have a weight component that isn't included here.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this calculator only an estimate?

The actual registration tax is calculated from several components (CO2, NOx and historically weight) with detailed brackets and rates that change every year in the national budget. This calculator uses a heavily simplified model with rounded example rates, only to give a rough indication.

Do electric cars pay registration tax?

Electric cars have their own, simpler registration tax rules than combustion-engine cars. In this simplified example, the tax for an EV is set to 0 kr, but note that heavy EVs may in reality have a separate weight component not included here.

Where do I find the official registration tax for a car?

Use the Norwegian Tax Administration's (Skatteetaten) official registration tax calculator at skatteetaten.no for an exact amount based on current rates and the car's actual data, or ask a car dealer.
